There’s a new kid on the block at Northcott!
Introducing Renae Reid, our fabulous new Dietitian, who can assist you with all things relating to diet and nutrition – specifically for people with disability.
Renae can assist you or your child if you have concerns about:
- Excessive weight gain or weight loss
- Being a selective or “fussy eater” who will only eat a few different foods
- Wound care
- Tube feeding
- Gut problems (e.g. constipation or reflux)
- Slow or excessive growth
- Low or high body weight
Renae says that one of the main groups she supports are families with children with Autism who can find mealtimes a stressful experience due to their children’s sensitivities to eating certain foods. These sensitivities can lead kids to eat a limited range of foods which can put them at risk of having poor nutrition. Renae works with families to understand their children’s preferences and find fun and imaginative ways to expand food variety in accordance with that. For example if a child will only eat foods that are white in colour, Renae might explore healthy foods such as chicken, fish, or the inside of a banana to allow that child to achieve optimal nutrition while also acknowledging their specific preferences.
Other key areas for Renae include assisting with weight gain and loss as well as using certain foods to help wounds to heal.
Renae adds “Optimal nutrition, health and wellbeing is more than just eating fruit and vegetables. Optimal nutrition includes enjoyment in eating, being able to have stress-free mealtimes and understanding which are the best foods to eat if you’ve got special requirements”.
