Snugglepot and Cuddlepie to light up Sydney

Northcott is super excited about the announcement today that works of beloved iconic Australian author May Gibbs will be celebrated at the internationally renowned Sydney event, Vivid Sydney 2018.

Destination NSW – the organisers of Vivid Sydney – approached May Gibbs copyright holders Northcott and the Cerebral Palsy Alliance (CPA) last year requesting permission to use imagery and story themes from one of her most famous works – Tales of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie. This year the story celebrates 100 years since its release.

“We thought what better a way to celebrate this anniversary and our Festival’s 10th birthday than to feature May Gibbs’ magnificent works in this year’s VIVID Sydney Festival,” said Destination NSW CEO, and Vivid Sydney Executive Producer, Sandra Chipchase.

The Snugglepot and Cuddlepie light installation will be projected onto the beautiful sandstone exterior of Customs House during Vivid Sydney which runs from Friday 25 May to Saturday 16 June.

“We’ve had to keep the news secret for quite some time,” said CEO Northcott, Kerry Stubbs.

“It’s great we can shout about it now and we hope it will reinvigorate the appreciation and love of May’s beautiful works,” she added.

May Gibbs left a lasting legacy to thousands of children and adults with disability when upon her death in 1969, she bequeathed the copyright of her works jointly to Northcott (then The NSW Society for Crippled Children) and Cerebral Palsy Alliance (then The Spastic Centre of NSW). May Gibbs’ generosity continues to assist the work of both organisations through royalties from the sale of May Gibbs books and associated products.

“The greater the interest in using the May Gibbs brand for products, the greater the funds raised to support both Northcott’s work and the work of the Cerebral Palsy Alliance,” said Kerry Stubbs.

“So for something as popular as Vivid Sydney, it means we will get great coverage out of it!”

May Gibbs’ themed products will be available for sale outside Customs House during Vivid Sydney 2018. Proceeds from the sale of these products will support Northcott and the Cerebral Palsy Alliance to continue their work to enable people with disability to realise their potential.
