Hitting the slopes and making friends

Jessica has been a Northcott customer for almost two years. The 20-year-old has enjoyed participating in our vocational skills service to support her transition from school to the workforce and has also previously used our short breaks and outings service.

Jessica doesn’t regularly participate in sport, but in late July, she took off with 8 customers and 5 Northcott staff to Perisher in the NSW Snowy Mountains to hit the slopes for some skiing action.

“I’ve been skiing before and it’s a lot of fun,” said Jessica. “But I really wanted to go again to enjoy the snow and just have some time away from home.”

“The skiing trip is not just about hitting the slopes,” says Northcott Recreation Coordinator, Alex Edwards. “That’s obviously a big part of the fun, but it’s much more than that. It’s a great way for young adults with disability to try something new, socialise with people their age and enjoy a holiday away from the normal routine of home.”

Jessica adds, “I knew a couple of people on the trip before we left, but now I have made some new friends. I love socialising with the group whilst we are away. That and the good food are up there with the things I loved most about the trip.”

Next time Jessica is keen to conquer snowboarding. ”But I’m also hoping to get away somewhere before next winter. “I want to go in summer so we can hang by a pool and have lots of fun with great people again.”
