Making a home with Vindya

Housing News

Vindya has recently moved into a new home in Taree and the word that keeps coming up is “blossoming”.

Even before she moved in, Vindya was planning how to make her new house a home. She quickly identified a spot in the yard to add a small tree and knew exactly how she wanted to lay out her room. Now that she has moved in, she is carefully selecting the right shade of green for her bedroom wall!

Beyond those important home comforts though, Vindya has also been quick to express her choices about activities in the home. The local team explain that when she first arrived she was quiet and reserved, taking time to adjust to her new surroundings. Now, she’s confident in expressing herself, letting everyone know what she can do and what she enjoys most about life in her new space.

The right home for Vindya

Vindya had been living with Northcott since 2020 in Supported Independent Living at Old Bar. During her stay, it was identified that Vindya would benefit from living in Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) which would meet her physical needs and provide a safe environment for her in the long term.

The application process for SDA funding took a lot of time and coordination but Northcott, Vindya and her family persevered and we are all delighted with the outcome.

Making the move

Once Vindya received SDA funding and her move could proceed, she felt sad to move away from her SIL housemates. However, Vindya knew she would still see them at her day program and they continue to socialise at their homes by hosting dinner parties and social occasions.

We sometimes see positive changes in relationships between children with a disability and their parents when they move into their own place. Vindya has flourished since moving out of home and enjoys having an adult-to-adult relationship with her parents and family.

Her family have been truly supportive of Vindya’s independence and developing her own fulfilling life with the support of Northcott. When Vindya’s parents moved from Taree to Sydney, and initially looked for accommodation in Sydney, Vindya expressed her preference to stay in Taree with her friends and chosen provider, Northcott.

Enjoying the benefits

Vindya’s new SDA home in Taree allows better access to her local allied health practitioners, doctors and hospital improving her health and wellbeing.

Vindya’s world has become richer with a broader circle of friendships, interests and the energy she brings to her new home and house mates.

Settling into her new place

With Northcott’s support, Vindya has the freedom to pursue the things she loves—like playing guitar, singing, cooking and watching Sri Lankan TV dramas.

Vindya loves sharing life with her household – she is continuing her journey to improve and practise her English-speaking skills, and in exchange shares her rich Sri Lankan cooking with her house mates. Adaptive kitchen tools and thoughtful adjustments make it easier for her to get involved in the kitchen.

Vindya loves all things creative, including sewing and crafts, music and particularly Mateo Bocelli, cooking, art, dancing, pottery, gardening and sharing her passion with others to bring a smile to their lives.

Vindya’s long-term home

Vindya’s home is more than just a place to live—it’s a space where she feels comfortable, calm and supported. She loves the quiet atmosphere, the spacious room she gets to call her own and most importantly, the opportunity to make it truly hers. Her parents are thrilled to see how happy and settled she is in her new environment, knowing she’s surrounded by caring support workers who are committed to helping her thrive.

Most importantly, it’s a place where she feels happy, supported and truly at home.
