Feeling the Vibe in Burwood
Earlier this month, Northcott held its first Feel the Vibe event for 2018. It was an overwhelming success, with people with disability, carers and health professionals all coming along to join us as we ‘lifted the lid on sexuality and disability’.
From 10am to 12:30pm a forum was held, with presentations by experts in the field of sexuality and disability, including Family Planning NSW Senior Health Promotion Officer (Disability) Ee-Lin Chang, sex worker activist and President of Touching Base Inc. Saul Isbister and Northcott Practice Manager Jill Maginnity.
Once the lights went down, it was time to mix sex education with a little fun at the Feel the Vibe expo. Attendees made the most of stalls by sexuality experts, including Max Black, ACON and Family Planning NSW. Drag queen with disability, Dizzy Bility was also on hand to keep the crowd entertained with hilarious musical interludes.
More than 100 people were at the event, including customers and staff from Northcott Casula. We caught up with customer Tarah Ruse and staffer Jessica Mayor to get the lowdown on the night.
How was your experience at Feel the Vibe?
Tarah: It was good, I liked it.
Jess: It was a fun experience and an interesting night.
What was your favourite part of the expo?
Tarah: The lube tasting.
Jess: My favourite part was walking around with the customers and looking at all the goodies available, oh and winning the lucky door prize!
Why did you want to attend Feel the Vibe?
Tarah: Honestly, I wanted to learn more for when I eventually have sex in order to be safe.
Jess: Because I think that it is a good chance for our customers to be able to see that this is natural and normal and to become well educated on sex.
Was the Feel the Vibe expo similar to what you expected it would be? If not, what was different?
Tarah: I was expecting just a presentation; it went past my expectations which made me enjoy it.
Jess: I was surprised at just how hands on we were allowed to be at the stalls – the stallholders were very accommodating. We were allowed to pick things up and have a go at them and I think that the customers enjoyed that part as well. The stall holders were very approachable, so customers felt very comfortable asking questions.
What would you say to people who might be considering attending Feel the Vibe?
Tarah: If you want to learn more about sex, and learn about being safe in sexual situations, you should go. There were a couple of awkward situations, but it was an enjoyable event.
Jess: I would say that it is a great night out! You can have a few laughs, have some fun and learn new things in a supportive and comfortable environment. It was a really good night out for our customers and staff and they really enjoyed the entertainment.
Northcott’s next Feel the Vibe event will be held in Albury on Thursday 12 July. For more information keep an eye on our Events page.
