Our Life Skills customers at Hornsby recently got creative in a fun and engaging self-portrait collage activity that encouraged self-expression and helped build important skills. Inspired by the art technique of continuous line drawing and collage, customers used mirrors and cellophane to trace their facial features with black markers, then brought their creations to life using colourful paper and personal touches.
Each portrait was paired with a short statement reflecting the customer’s identity, interests, and individuality. The results were not only visually striking but deeply meaningful, celebrating diversity and self-awareness through art.
This hands-on activity aimed to nurture a range of valuable skills, including:
- Art and craft techniques such as line drawing, composition, and collage layering.
- Fine motor skills through careful tracing and paper cutting.
- Self-expression by encouraging participants to reflect on and represent who they are.
It was a wonderful way for customers to learn, express themselves and connect with others through creativity.
And there’s more on the horizon – some of our Work & Study customers will soon be starting a short course at Hornsby Community College called Ready Set Barista.
