Christina builds confidence and healthy habits through food

When Christina first connected with our dietetics service, her main goal was simple yet meaningful: to eat healthier and lose weight. But over time, her journey has become about so much more — gaining independence, learning new skills, and embracing a healthier, more balanced lifestyle.

Support that makes a difference

Christina worked closely with Jamil, one of our dedicated dietitians, and their sessions have become the highlight of her week. More than just learning about food, Christina enjoys cooking with Jamil, exploring healthy recipes, and having conversations about her day. These moments have helped her feel comfortable and motivated to take charge of her health.

From goals to growth

Christina’s goal was self-management and overall wellbeing. This included weight management, but also the prevention and management of other health conditions.

Her day-to-day eating habits have improved significantly. Christina now includes more vegetables in her meals, pays attention to portion sizes, and sticks to regular mealtimes, creating structure and consistency that supports her goals.

Empowering strategies

One of the most effective strategies Jamil has shared with Christina was encouraging her to take more control over her meals. From grocery shopping, with healthy choices in mind, to planning and preparing meals she can share with her family, Christina has become an active participant in her own nutrition. This hands-on approach has been empowering, allowing her to develop both skills and confidence.

A positive outlook

Making these changes hasn’t always been easy, but they’ve been rewarding. Christina has embraced small, steady improvements over the past couple of years. As her skills have grown, so has her confidence. She’s become more curious about new ingredients and dishes, adding her own creative flair to the meals she prepares.

Her growing sense of independence and interest in cooking has even extended beyond the kitchen. Christina is now more eager to engage in community activities, and her sessions with Jamil are filled with variety to keep her excited and inspired.

A favourite dish

Of all the meals Christina has learned to cook, one stands out: a delicious one-pot veggie pasta dish. It’s simple, nutritious, and packed with flavour — and most importantly, it’s a dish she’s proud to make and share.

Christina’s journey is a reminder that with the right support, small steps can lead to big changes. Through a mix of education, encouragement, and a lot of heart, she’s discovering just how capable she really is.
