Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI) Physiotherapy
Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI) is a hands-on physiotherapy approach designed to help babies and children develop stronger movement patterns. It uses fun, repetitive, and carefully graded activities to encourage the brain and body to learn new skills like sitting, crawling, standing, and walking.
As a physiotherapist, I work closely with children and their families to help each child progress toward their individual movement goals. I have seen firsthand how Dynamic Movement Intervention can create meaningful change, even in children with significant movement challenges, in a relatively short period of time. My DMI qualification, completed in 2025, has strengthened my ability to support children using targeted, evidence-informed techniques that promote neurodevelopment, confidence, and independence.

What Is DMI?
DMI focuses on helping children activate their core muscles, improve balance, and develop more coordinated movement. Therapists use gentle but purposeful movements to help children learn how to support themselves, move more confidently, and progress toward important milestones.
Who Can Benefit from DMI?
DMI can support a wide range of children, including those with:
- Developmental delays (such as delays in rolling, sitting, crawling, or walking)
- Low muscle tone (hypotonia)
- Cerebral palsy or other neurological conditions
- Genetic conditions like Down syndrome, Angelman syndrome, or Prader–Willi syndrome
- Movement difficulties linked to premature birth
- Torticollis, asymmetry, or coordination challenges
- Children who are progressing slowly or need more focused motor support
How DMI Sessions Work
During DMI sessions, the physiotherapist:
- Observes how your child moves and what skills they are working toward
- Chooses specific activities to challenge your child at the right level
- Helps your child try new positions and movements in a supportive way
- Encourages your child to use their muscles and balance systems more effectively
- Adjusts activities as your child grows stronger and learns new skills
Parents are always included in the process. You will learn simple ways to support your child’s movement at home, making therapy even more effective.
Why Families Like DMI
Parents often report that DMI:
- Helps their child progress more quickly
- Builds confidence and independence
- Improves core strength and body awareness
- Makes therapy engaging and enjoyable
