Vanessa has always loved the water. From a young age, swimming wasn’t just a hobby, it was a passion. Today, that passion has grown into something even more meaningful: a job she loves, a sport she excels at and a future she’s building one stroke at a time.
Turning passion into a career
Vanessa has been swimming competitively for over four years, participating in major events like SAGE, Metropolis and the Nationals. She’s trained in freestyle, backstroke and butterfly.
“I enjoy the challenges that come with swimming,” she says. “I’ve always loved the water, even as a baby. Once I started training and competing, I just kept getting faster. That’s when I really fell in love with the sport.”
Vanessa had been part of Northcott’s Work & Study (W&S) program for around three years when, 18 months ago she saw a job advertisement for a swimming teacher at Royal Life Saving Seven Hills, and something clicked.
“I saw the job online and knew I wanted to apply. I love swimming and I wanted to support kids on their own swimming journey. I knew it would be meaningful work.”
From nervous to confident
Vanessa admits the process of applying for her first job was nerve-wracking.
“I was a bit frazzled before the interview,” she laughs. “But I told myself how important this opportunity was, and I pushed through the nerves.”
With the support of her mum, who drove her to the interview and the guidance from her Northcott support team, Vanessa prepared by updating her resume and doing mock interviews through the W&S program.
“There were a few support workers who really helped me, Damian, Jun, and Kayla. They supported me in my personal growth and helped me understand what I’m capable of accomplishing.”
Making a splash at work
Today, Vanessa works casually as a swimming teacher at Royal Life Saving Seven Hills, teaching children of all levels every week. And she’s loving it.
“I enjoy how supportive my workplace is,” Vanessa says. “The bosses and coworkers are understanding, and it’s been a great first job. I really like teaching people of all ages and skills in a sport that I’m so passionate about. I love making the classes fun for them.”
Vanessa has not only found employment, she’s found confidence and a sense of purpose.
Growing beyond the pool
Through the Work & Study program and her employment, Vanessa has learned more than just how to be a great teacher.
She’s learned to socialise, manage her time and interact with others in ways that support her personal and professional growth. She’s explored what work is like through different placements and has developed skills in communication, self-confidence and even how to handle bullying.
“Northcott has helped me come out of my shell. I’ve learnt how to teach others, explore my potential and find my confidence through different experiences.”
Looking ahead
Vanessa’s journey is far from over – and she’s excited for what comes next.
“My hope for the future is that I continue working at Royal Life Saving, improving how I teach, building my confidence and doing my best every day. I want to keep getting better and better, not giving up. Every day is a new day and we all try our best.”
Vanessa is also open to exploring more job opportunities in the future, with the aim of continuing her growth and capabilities.
Her story is a wonderful reminder of how passion, perseverance and the right support can open doors and lead to a career that makes a real difference.
