Meet Kerrie, a support worker from Northcott Coffs Harbour

“Working for Northcott has made me really happy. I’m proud to say I’m a support worker. I really appreciate Northcott giving me the chance to become who I am today.”

Kerrie started working for Northcott around 4 years ago, following in the footsteps of her twin sister, who works independently supporting people with disability.

“I had no experience in support work or the disability sector,” says Kerrie. “Making a difference in other people’s lives sounded very rewarding to me.”

Kerrie usually works one-on-one supporting customers, like Samantha, to achieve their goals. Occasionally, she fills shifts in other Northcott services such as Housing or Life Skills, which she also enjoys.

“I like making a positive difference in people’s lives, being cheerful, taking them out and about, getting to know my customers and their goals in life,” Kerrie says.

Recently I was very proud that I encouraged one of my customers to plan a birthday celebration. It went off really well, helping my customer gain more independence.

Kerrie says she feels supported by Northcott, which gives her confidence in her role.
“Coordinators and especially other support workers are always there for you if you need them. They are there to help, which is a relief. And you’re never alone,” she explains.

Passionate about promoting the rights of people with disability, Kerrie says everyone needs to be remember that people with disability deserve dignity and respect.
“It’s important to have compassion towards everyone. You never know what they are thinking or going through.

“To become a support worker, you need to be kind and caring. Always listen to your customers’ needs and have fun. Being happy makes a huge impact on our customers’ lives.”
