Ever since finishing high school, Lauren’s goal was to move out of her family home to live independently. When Northcott offered her a room in a supported independent living house, Lauren and her family knew it was the right fit for her.
Moving out of home
At the time, Lauren was in her mid-20s and accessing Northcott’s Life Skills program in Tamworth. With Northcott’s support, she was growing in confidence and learning important skills to be able to move out of home.
“I always wanted to live away from my family. It just felt like something I wanted to do,” she says.
“Since living out of home, I’m more confident. I like feeling independent.”
A neat and tidy home
Lauren’s home is neat and tidy, with a light-filled open plan kitchen, dining and living space. It is situated in a quiet neighbourhood, not far from her family home, making it easy for her to regularly visit her parents and siblings, especially her baby niece.
My favourite thing about living here is the quietness. When I am at home, I like watching TV and reading. Sometimes I cook with my support worker. I like baking jam drops.

Living with Chrissy
Lauren also enjoys spending time with her housemate Chrissy, who is non-verbal. The pair collect cans and bottles to take to their local Return and Earn depot. They use the money they raise to do something fun together. Recently, to celebrate Chrissy 28th birthday, they spent their money on takeaway hot chips as a special treat.
“Chrissy is very quiet. I like helping her out with her food and drink. It’s good to look after you housemates,” Lauren says.
Lauren and Chrissy are supported in their home by a team of Northcott support workers who provide 24/7 care across two shifts. Twice a week, Lauren has one-on-one support to assist her with shopping, meal preparation and going to the gym and appointments.
On other days, Lauren attends Northcott’s Life Skills program. This year, for the first time, Lauren has started volunteering regularly at a local second hand retail store.
Looking for a housemate
