The right equipment for Liz

NDIS Occupational Therapy

For people with disability, the right equipment can be life-changing. But getting the right equipment is about much more than choosing a product from a catalogue.

Specialist Occupational Therapy Support for Equipment and Mobility Solutions in Toowoomba

At Northcott Toowoomba, our Occupational Therapists take the time to understand each person’s goals, daily routines, physical needs and aspirations. We work alongside participants, families, equipment suppliers and the NDIS to find solutions that support independence, comfort and participation in everyday life.

More Than Just a Wheelchair

When Toowoomba resident Liz needed a new wheelchair, she already knew the difference inappropriate equipment could make.

Her first wheelchair met the basic requirement of providing mobility, but it wasn’t designed for her individual needs.

“In my own words, I would say if you want to know what that’s like, just try to wear shoes three sizes too large for a week and see how you cope.”

The chair was heavy, difficult to manoeuvre and limited her independence. Family members often had to push her and everyday outings became more challenging than they should have been.

After years of managing with equipment that wasn’t properly matched to her needs, Liz connected with Northcott Occupational Therapist Jenitta.

Taking the Time to Listen

Every person’s situation is different. That’s why a thorough equipment assessment is essential.

For Liz, this meant taking the time to understand how she uses her wheelchair, how her condition affects her mobility, how she travels around the community and what matters most in her day-to-day life.

Together, Liz and Jenitta explored a range of options, trialled different wheelchair configurations and carefully considered everything from seating and postural support through to transport requirements and ease of self-propulsion.

“Jenitta really listened and then ILS really listened to both of us.”

Rather than settling for an “off-the-shelf” solution, every decision was made with Liz’s individual needs and goals in mind.

Navigating the NDIS Process

Accessing complex equipment through the NDIS can be a lengthy and sometimes challenging process.

Northcott’s Occupational Therapists help participants navigate every step, including assessments, equipment trials, detailed reports and funding applications.

For Liz, this advocacy helped secure funding for a customised wheelchair and power assist system that better supports her mobility, independence and participation in community life.

While the process took time, the outcome was worth it.

Independence That Matters

Today, Liz has equipment that supports the life she wants to live.

Whether she’s attending theatre performances, writing, meeting friends, participating in community events or simply getting out and about around Toowoomba, she can focus on what matters to her rather than worrying about how she’ll get there.

“I really want to get going. I’ve got plans, I’ve got ideas, I’ve got things to do, I’ve got people to see.”

“I don’t want to have to think about how do I get out of the house. I just want to know what time the taxi can get here.”

For Liz, the right equipment hasn’t simply improved mobility. It’s helped restore freedom, confidence and independence.
