New Supported Independent Living Practice Standards came into effect in July 2026. Northcott has reviewed our Supported Independent Living (SIL) services and is improving information, processes and staff training to ensure our support remains safe, respectful and centred on each customer.
What are the SIL Practice Standards?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Quality and Safeguards Commission introduced the standards to help providers understand what high-quality SIL support should look like. They explain how providers should support people to make choices, stay safe, understand information and receive services that respect their rights and needs.
How Northcott is responding
Since July, Northcott has been comparing the new standards with the way we currently support people in SIL. This review is helping us identify what we already do well and where we can improve.
Our review identified opportunities to make information and support clearer for customers. We are working on:
- Developing more Easy Read information and guides.
- Creating clearer handbooks about our SIL and Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) services.
- Strengthening the ways we support customers to make informed choices about their lives and services.
- Updating policies, processes and staff training.
- Providing clearer information about housing, support, customer rights and choices.
What customers can expect
Northcott is committed to providing services that are safe, respectful and centred on each person. This work will continue over the coming months, and we will share new guides and information with customers as they become available.
