For Mark, a long-time Northcott customer, there’s something truly special about being outdoors. After his day program with WISH, where he enjoys bowling, shopping, and cooking meals like tuna bake and pasta, he finds peace and happiness in his garden. Over the years, gardening has become more than just a hobby for Mark; it’s a passion, a daily ritual, and a personal goal he has lovingly nurtured for nearly a decade.
With support from the dedicated team at his accommodation, Mark has grown a thriving veggie patch filled with everything from sweet potatoes and cherry tomatoes to chillies, mint, lemongrass, and even bananas. “He feels calm and proud when he’s in the garden,” says one Northcott staff member.
“Watching the plants grow gives him a real sense of achievement.”
Earlier this year, Mark entered the Hume in Bloom competition, thanks to encouragement and support from staff at The Ponds. They helped him prepare his entry, took photos of his garden, and submitted the application to Hume Housing. Their combined effort paid off—Mark proudly secured 4th place in the competition.
Teamwork makes the garden grow
Mark’s success didn’t happen overnight. The staff at The Ponds have been by his side every step of the way, from watering and weeding to composting kitchen scraps and planning trips to Bunnings for seeds and supplies.
This is a win not just for Mark, but for the staff at The Ponds accommodation. It is so rewarding to see the little everyday things we support, like gardening, turn into something big for our customers.

Hume Housing also played a special part in recognising Mark’s green thumb. They hosted a small celebration at the house, complete with food, drinks, and the presentation of his certificate and Bunnings voucher, making Mark feel truly appreciated.

Looking ahead with joy and pride
Mark’s love for the outdoors isn’t just limited to gardening. He enjoys helping staff and other customers—whether it’s putting the washing away or tidying up the dishes. He also loves puzzles, Lego, and outings with his brother James, who proudly says:
“I’m quite happy. Mark is always keen to get involved in activities when given a chance. He’s always been active. Northcott staff seem to be doing a good job—he’s happy and healthy every time I see him.”
Mark’s garden continues to flourish, and so does he. His eyes are now set on nurturing his banana tree and perhaps entering more competitions in the future.
Here’s to many more sunny days in the garden, and to all the people—Northcott staff, Hume Housing, and Mark’s family, who help make dreams bloom one leaf at a time.
Well done, Mark! Your garden is growing—and so are you.
