Choosing a career path with diversity

Meet Chloe Moon! Chloe is a Support Worker from Illawarra and we recently had a chat with her to learn about her career journey and why she believes Northcott is inclusive workplace for all.

When did you start with Northcott and tell us a little bit about yourself?

I began my journey with Northcott in early 2021 within the Illawarra Region. I am a people-person and I feel re-energised through chatting and hearing stories from those around me. It is because of this characteristic that I have naturally gravitated towards the Disability Support Worker role. In addition to my time spent supporting at Northcott throughout the week, I study Environmental Science at University of Wollongong. It is because of my passion for all things nature, I sometimes try to incorporate ‘nature-themed’ fun ideas into my shifts, such as beach walks for exercise and mental clarity, in addition to gardening to promote environmental stewardship and life skills. I have also worked in collaboration with the Sexuality and Relationships Education team at Northcott to design our new Pride T-Shirts for the upcoming Mardi Gras Pride Day 2023 in Sydney.  

What do you enjoy the most about being a Support Worker?

I enjoy being a Support Worker due to the sense of fulfilment that comes from assisting individuals to lead independent lives. I relish the opportunity to form a positive influence on someone’s day. This may be supporting a customer to apply for their dream employment opportunity, or having an inspiring conversation about how they have grown to be the best person they can be. I take pride in encouraging my customers to reach their own full potential. 

What gets you out of bed each day to come to work?

I welcome each day I work with excitement to forge professional relationships with both customers and work colleagues. I relish the opportunity to make meaningful connections and work as part of a team. My work also gives me a sense of purpose knowing that I can make a difference in people’s lives. 

What is your most memorable customer achievement? 

There are way too many to count! Each customer that I have supported has displayed great bravery and determination to achieve their goals. I have supported a customer who has a passion for all things acting and film. This customer is driven to make their dreams of becoming a star a reality. We have worked as a team to write numerous applications and emails to prospective employers. This client has landed some inspiring roles with Channel 9 and Binge. They have also just been accepted into a course offered by the prestigious Actors Centre Australia in Sydney. 

Why do you think Northcott is an inclusive place to work and what is your favourite part about working here? 

Northcott welcomes diversity and inclusivity in both its customers and employees. We believe that everyone should have equal opportunities for growth, regardless of their background or identity. To foster this, we celebrate differences and actively encourage participation in events that celebrate diversity. It is for this reason that I enjoy working with Northcott. I also appreciate the commitment and time that goes into the common goal of providing personalised support to reach each customer’s potential. 

Do you have any favourite mottos you live your life by?

“Trying your hardest is the best you can do.” – an anonymous quote which has stuck with me since my younger years. In this world we sometimes don’t give our hardworking selves enough credit.
