Thursday 20 February was a very special day for Northcott. We were lucky enough to have the Hon Scott Morrison MP, Prime Minister of Australia, help us launch our brand new Supported Disability Accommodation at Oran Park.
The beautiful home is fit for purpose, and equipped with the latest advances in assistive technology. This includes automated doors, blinds and adjustable benches.
The Prime Minister said: “The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is all about having the ability to achieve. That’s what we’re focused on and that is what this home enables. It goes to the heart of our country’s foundations. The idea that if you have a go, you get a go. Ricky and Vicki [Northcott customers and new residents at the Oran Park home], they’re having a great go. It’s fantastic they’re getting this go here as they move into this new home. And that’s what the program (NDIS) is designed to achieve.”
First of many purpose-built homes
Northcott Deputy CEO, Lee Carpenter, said it was very exciting to be launching the first of many purpose-built homes for people with disability.
One of the new residents, Ricky, added: “Moving to Oran Park will be life changing for me, not only living closer to my family, [but] being able to live the life I want. I love the house, it’s amazing and I can’t wait to move in.”
Northcott will be the Supported Independent Living (SIL) provider for residents of the Oran Park home. SIL funding is provided to people with disability by the NDIS to support them to successfully undertake daily tasks in order for them to live independently.
DPN Casa Capace is the Supported Disability Accommodation (SDA) provider for the home. This is where NDIS funding is used for people with disability who have severe functional impairment or highly complex support needs, so they may access specialist housing alternatives.
Northcott wants to be at the forefront of providing people with disability more options for housing across NSW. The organisation will be partnering further with DPN Casa Capace and other developers in the near future to expand this market need. This includes new homes in major regional centres including Wagga Wagga, Taree, Coffs Harbour and Ballina.
