How to access Medium Term Accommodation

News Short Stay

Northcott Queensland offers NDIS Medium Term Accommodation (MTA) for extended stays up to 90 days on the Gold Coast.

You may wish to access MTA as a transitional arrangement if you have been in hospital or rehab and need some extra care before returning home. It can also be used by clients who are waiting to move into SIL accommodation or a more permanent home.

Clients who want to see if Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) or Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a good long term option can also benefit from Medium Term Accommodation.

Our Getaway

Our Getaway on the Gold Coast is a fully accessible facility designed specifically with neuromuscular and physical disability access in mind. It’s a home from home with lots of open space and comfortable private rooms with TV and accessibility features.

What support is available at Northcott’s Medium Term Accommodation?

Medium Term Accommodation may or may not require support workers.  This is quoted on an individual basis depending on needs.

For those who do need support, our specialist disability team is on hand to keep you safe and support individual healthcare needs.

Medium Term Accommodation from the NDIS only covers the accommodation cost and doesn’t include day-to-day living costs like food, internet or electricity. Medium Term Accommodation also doesn’t include any personal care supports however you may be able to use other funds in your NDIS package to support this.

Who is eligible for Medium Term Accommodation?

Medium Term Accommodation is available to eligible NDIS participants who require temporary housing while they wait for a permanent home to become ready or available to use. NDIS MTA is usually funded for up to 90 days.

For example, it can be used:

  • as bridging accommodation for younger people who are at risk of being admitted (or who want to leave) an aged care home
  • for participants who are ready to leave hospital or rehabilitation but are waiting for home modifications, assisted technology or support equipment to be placed in their home
  • by people who are eligible for Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA), but need somewhere to stay while they are waiting for a vacancy or for a build to be completed
  • because of a breakdown of your supports that mean you can’t live in your current home. You might need somewhere to stay before your disability supports are ready, and you can move into your new place.

What is the difference between MTA, SIL and SDA?

Here is a quick guide to some of the terms used by the NDIS and Support Providers:

  • Medium Term Accommodation (MTA) is temporary housing while an NDIS participant waits for permanent accommodation.
  • Supported Independent Living (SIL) is support you receive at home, to allow you to live independently.
  • Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is housing for people who have very high support needs and equipment  such as ceiling hoists, automatic doors etc.

How do I get SDA funding?

SDA funding is money to provide a home for you to live in. It is designed to let people who have a very significant functional impairment or high support needs live as independently as possible.

There are several levels of funding provided by the NDIS depending on your needs. You must meet NDIS criteria to access SDA including having high support needs or an extreme functional impairment. You will also need to show that receiving SDA will help you pursue your NDIS goals, and deliver long-term benefits. basically, you need to demonstrate that your request for SDA funding is reasonable and necessary to help improve your independence and quality of life.
