Festive recipes approved by our Dietitians

Dietetics News

The holiday season is filled with tempting sweets, and while it’s perfectly fine to indulge a little, it’s also important to remember the foods that truly fuel our bodies—wholefoods! Wholefoods are nature’s best energy source, offering nutrition without the unnecessary processing, packaging, or additives (like excess sugar).

What makes wholefoods so exciting is the endless potential to turn them into something delicious and festive. These foods don’t need flashy packaging—they’re naturally wholesome and full of flavour, waiting for a creative touch.

At Northcott, our dietetic team has crafted some fun and nutritious recipes to help you and your family enjoy a more wholesome Christmas. These recipes are designed to inspire cooking together, creating cherished memories while encouraging young ones to explore new foods and develop basic kitchen skills.

As you prepare these recipes, take the opportunity to talk about what makes them so wholesome:

1. Dietary Fibre

Found mostly in fruits, vegetables (like pumpkin, watermelon, cucumber, and tomatoes), and wholegrains (like oats), dietary fibre helps keep your digestion happy by slowing it down so it does not feel stressed handling too much at once.

Fibre also helps you feel fuller for longer, reducing the temptation to overeat.

2. Vitamins and Minerals

Fruits and vegetables are packed with essential vitamins and minerals to keep your body healthy.

Spices like cinnamon and ginger add festive flavours while offering antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties which is perfect for managing stress during the busy holiday season.

3. Protein

Dairy products like milk, cheese and yoghurt contain protein which help to keep muscles strong and supports growth in children. For adults, it’s essential for maintaining overall body function.

4. Calcium

Dairy products including yogurt, milk, and cheese are also a source of calcium, which is crucial for building strong bones in children and maintaining bone health in adults.

Wholefoods fuel your family with the energy needed to enjoy the holidays and keep everyone healthy and strong. Reach out to our team if you have any concerns or questions about our dietetic service using the email below:
