NAIDOC Week was a wonderful celebration of culture and community at Northcott. Our staff and customers increased their cultural understanding through engaging activities that honoured Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage. From vibrant artworks and traditional crafts to participating in community events and sharing stories, NAIDOC Week gave us an opportunity to form deeper connections with the diverse communities we serve.
Here are our NAIDOC Week highlights:
Life Skills North Parramatta
Life Skills customers in North Parramatta learnt about the rich history and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. They expressed their creativity and cultural knowledge by making hand art pieces, later placing them in the garden.
Out and about in Ballina
Staff and customers in Ballina attended the NAIDOC celebration walk where they joined their community in celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. Northcott support workers also held a stall at Jarjum NAIDOC sport & stalls day where young people and their families played rounds of touch. Our staff also assisted with catering lunch for the event.
NAIDOC Week Taree highlights
Staff and customers in Taree celebrated the Worimi and Biripi peoples throughout the week with hands-on activities that celebrated Indigenous traditions. Our customers enjoyed working together on a large canvas painting and learnt how to make bracelets and braid hair. The creativity continued later in the week with a flag-making station where customers painted their interpretations of community values.
Venturing into Worimi Country, Northcott staff supported customers to take part in the Community Fun Day where they enjoyed live entertainment and a BBQ lunch. Customers had the opportunity to try traditional dishes including crocodile, kangaroo and emu.
The Community Fun Day was a great opportunity for Northcott staff to connect with members of the community who were interested in learning about our services.
We had an information stall set up. We had members of community come over and have a chat to us about what services we provide. Our customers were quite proud and quick to let everyone know Northcott was the best.
Louise, Senior Support Worker.
Customer Tyson was proud to meet Uncle Russel.
