Teeing up for a fun-filled summer

In Coffs Harbour, there’s a group of 23 friends who love getting out and about in the community, building their independence and simply having fun!

The friends are part of Northcott’s Life Skills group which focuses on supporting young people with disability to do the things they enjoy most. The fun the group gets up to differs from day to day. It can include outings like fishing expeditions, hitting the sand and waves at a local beach, or aiming for a strike at the local ten-pin bowling centre.

This summer, the friends have a stack of fantastic activities on their wish list. However, there is one small barrier preventing everyone from joining in. The bus the group currently uses to get around simply isn’t big enough for everyone.

“I’m just not comfortable with anyone staying behind,” says Northcott Area Manager Wayne Nagle. “So I’m on a mission!”

Wayne wants to raise funds from the local community to pay for a new bus to ensure everyone can join in on the fun. The bus will also be modified for those in the group who use wheelchairs.

After months of planning, sourcing sponsorships and gathering donations from local businesses, Wayne and his Northcott crew tee’d up a fundraising Golf Day for more than 100 competitors on Friday 3 November 2017.

With the sun shining over the glistening greens, the group enjoyed a friendly round of golf, followed by great snacks, thirst-quenching drinks and a highly competitive bidding war for the fabulous prizes available. The generous Coffs Harbour community certainly ‘turned up’ on the day and made a big dent in Wayne’s $77,000 target required for the new bus and modifications.

Northcott Life Skills group member, Lee-Ann Tweedie is super keen to reach the fundraising goal. “If more people with wheelchairs fit in the bus, that means less trips and more time to spend doing the fun things!” she says.

Thanks to the generosity of major sponsors like Car Finder, Hoys Physiotherapy, Coffs Harbour Golf Club and many other local businesses and community members, the group has almost reached their target.
