Singin’ in the rain.. Mardi Gras 2017

Well despite the fact that the rain did in fact rain on our parade this year (nothing serious just a few sprinkles here and there…) the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras 2017 was none the less an absolutely spectacular event with more people with disability making their presence felt in it than ever before.

Mardi Gras 2017

Friends from as a far a field as W.A, Taree, Adelaide and the ACT joined us on our combined float with our parade partners People with Disability Australia, the Cerebral Palsy Alliance and the NDIA (National Disability Insurance Agency). Somehow we all managed to co-ordinate our orange outfits and funky dance moves to the show stopping anthem- ‘Sweet Lovin’ by Sigala as you can see here.

As you can see in the video our beautiful float bore this year’s slogan ME = U as we celebrated disability, diversity and equality in keeping with the overall theme for this year’s Mardi Gras which was #creating equality.

This year our float attracted more media attention than ever before with SBS, Buzzfeed, Star Observer and Same, Same all featuring stories on our float and the subject of disability and sexuality.

With a massive turnout of over 150 people involved we’d like to say a huge thanks to everyone who came along on the night and made it once again such a joyful and celebratory event.

Special thanks also goes to our spectacular organisers Alicia Melita and Keira Watkins to our generous sponsors Google for which Northcott was a proud recipient of a Google and Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Community Parade Grant.

We hope to see you next year!!
