The NDIS to be feared or not?

Travis Bellamy is a long time Northcott customer. This year he has been acting as one of Northcott’s Inclusion Champions. Here, he shares his thoughts on the NDIS rollout and gives his advice to people with disability about how to approach drawing up their NDIS plans:

Hi, my name is Travis Bellamy and I am 23 years old.

On the first of July this year the first rollout of the national disability insurance began which has scared a lot of people because of the way services are going to be run.

Before the NDIS, people were given a set amount of funding to get a particular service and so on whereas now a person with disability has the power to choose what services they receive so they can get the most out of their life.

So how can you prepare for the NDIS?

Sit down with a family member or a close friend and list everything that is and isn’t working in your day to day life, like your supports both at home and in the community. Then think of the goals you want to achieve – whether its learning a new skills for work or your own benefit.

Something that has really benefited me recently was an application to have an electric door installed in my home. I live in public housing with my mother and until the door was installed I had to depend on my mother to open or shut the door for me. Now there is a big button which sits on my tray which I press to open and close the door which has given me so more independence around the house.

If I could give you one piece of advice while you’re preparing for your NDIS planning meeting, it would be don’t be afraid or ashamed to ask for what you need.
