International Day of People with Disability - 3 December 2018

Together we can be make inclusion a reality, for everybody. Hold an activity or small event to mark International Day of People with Disability 2018 in your workplace.

International Day of People with Disability is held each year on 3 December. It is a day that aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability. It’s also a celebration of the contribution people with disability make to the community.

By gathering together to celebrate this day, you can take practical action to highlight your support of people with disability and actively contribute to building a genuinely inclusive society.

You can host an event any time between now and 31 December 2018 and raise funds to support Northcott’s important services.

Your event doesn’t need to be huge –  just a small and meaningful gathering or series of activities to show your commitment. It can be a morning tea; a ‘Talk and Learn’ lunch; a Ted Talk movie night or you could invite a person with disability to be your special guest or host a Q&A.

Through this action your organisation will help break down barriers for the 4.3 million Australians who have disability and help to create positive change in our community.

Susu goes to Vocational Skills three times a week and Everyday Life Skills twice a week. “At Vocational Skills, we learn about all different things to assist with finding and keeping a job. We’ve learnt about interviews, how to dress for interviews and how to ask questions in interviews.

“At Everyday Life Skills, the staff supported me to learn to travel on my own via public transport. They’ve taught me how to cook, how to use the washing machine and the dryer. They’ve taught me how to seek help if I need it, for example, for mental health.”

Susu says with Northcott’s support she is learning skills she wouldn’t otherwise be able to learn at home or by herself, giving her a great sense of self achievement and the confidence to work towards other goals for her future. “I’m really proud of learning travel training. I’ve been told that I couldn’t do it, but I proved them wrong and I can do it. That was a really good feeling,” she says.

Susu's proving she can do it. Inclusion is for everybody.
