Building capacity…and a bathroom!

“I’m more than happy with Northcott. Hayley has been supporting me with everything – funding issues, rostering issues, anything I need or if I have any queries about anything.”

When Jodie was approved for an NDIS plan in 2016, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) suggested she choose a Coordination of Supports service to assist her in accessing her funding, choosing services and building her capacity to manage her funding and plan herself.

Jodie chose Northcott from a list and hasn’t looked back.

“When Jodie came to us in 2016, she hadn’t had a lot of support so we set her up with a few different services,” explains Hayley, Jodie’s Support Coordinator.

“She wasn’t getting support to access the community. Jodie now goes out four days a week. She has support for shopping, support with cleaning, yard maintenance, all those sorts of things that she didn’t have before.

One of the most important ways Hayley has supported Jodie has been to manage the approval of home modifications as part of her NDIS plan. Jodie has cerebral palsy and osteoporosis. Balance issues mean her existing bathroom, with a shower over a bathtub and no handrails, is unsafe for her. The steps to her home’s front entrance are also becoming increasingly difficult for Jodie to manage. An occupational therapy assessment recommended a new bathroom and ramp for Jodie’s home.

“It’s taken about three years to get approval for Jodie’s home modifications and to get the builder in. There are not a lot of local providers and NDIS approved builders available and we had to get quite a lot of assessments and evidence to get the approval through,” Hayley says.

“So it’s been many years of negotiating with several providers and builders to get exactly what we needed. But it’s all through now and building of Jodie’s ramp is starting. The bathroom modification will be starting next month,” Hayley says.

Jodie is grateful for all the assistance from Hayley throughout the long process and she “can’t wait” for her new bathroom. “It’s going to make life so much better. I’m just lucky that I haven’t fallen in there.”

Accessing Northcott’s Coordination of Supports service has also given Jodie skills and confidence to properly understand her plan and her funding. She says she feels confident handling administrative tasks herself, but appreciates Hayley and all the support she has provided.

“Hayley and Northcott bend over backwards to support in any way they can.”
